From a hilltop in Tuscany

Our wedding story started with an engagement in Tuscany. Taila & her mother, Linda, had (yes, had) to reschedule their failed March 2020 trip to Italy and David decided to join them. After carrying the ring around Italy for 12 days, David decided to pop the question. Taila, David, and Linda were outside taking pictures when David asked Linda to take one more photo. As soon as David got down on one knee everyone got pretty emotional, but we managed to get that one more photo (and a yes)!

Mauna Lani, an Auberge Resort Collection

68-1400 Mauna Lani Drive, Waimea, HI 96743

We have access to "Run-of-House" rooms at a preferred rate on a first-come, first-served basis. "Run-of-House" rooms include Mountain View, Garden View and Partial Ocean. Our preferred rate is $599/per night, plus resort fees and taxes. Please see the Mauna Lani's website for further details on bed options and views/layouts of each room. If you have a more specific room preference (i.e., 2 queen beds, partial ocean, first floor, etc.), rooms can be guaranteed at $699/per night, plus resort fees and taxes.
Guaranteed Ocean View rooms and suites are available at preferred rate of 20% off the published website rate.
RESERVATION CUT-OFF:
The Resort has agreed to extend the above preferred rates until May 30, 2023 so long as the Resort has not exceeded 90% occupancy in the class of room requested. Guestrooms requested after this date may be added to the block at the preferred rates stated above so long as the Resort has not exceeded 90% occupancy in that class of room requested and will be confirmed based on actual availability.
The Resort requires a deposit of 100% of the full reserved stay per room to confirm individual accommodation. Individual guests may cancel their reservation up to 30 days prior to the Wedding Date (June 30) to be eligible for a full refund. Any individual cancellations within the 30 days prior to the Wedding Date will forfeit the deposit. Canceled fees are subject to the general excise tax. Discounted group rates cannot be combined with any other offer and are non-transferable, however, the Resort will permit one name change per reservation at no charge.
If you're set on Ocean Front or Ocean View, we would suggest monitoring the Auberge website as there have been discounts greater than 20% publically available from time to time (as well as other discounts (i.e., including breakfast or resort credits) coupled with the 20% preferred rate we were offered).
To make a reservation at the Mauna Lani, please email mnl.groups@aubergeresorts.com and reference code MCWED0623 for the preferred rates.
As of now, we are staying at Mauna Lani, an Auberge Resort, June 27 - July 2nd.

Airports

There are 2 airports on the Big Island:
The Mauna Lani, where we will be getting married, is about 30 minutes (or approx. 22 miles) from Kona International Airport (KOA) or about 90 minutes (approx. 73 miles) from Hilo International Airport (ITO).

Other Accommodations

Mauna Lani Resort sits in an HOA with a few hotels, condos and homes. Inside the Mauna Lani HOA you may find accommodations for rent through Southkohala.com (we would suggest searching inside of Mauna Lani, but they do offer accommodations in surrounding areas).
Additionally, the Fairmont Orchid is essentially next door and is walkable to the Mauna Lani Resort along the beach (about 15 mins walk) or only a few minutes by car. The next "village" to the south (10 minutes by car) is Waikoloa Village and includes the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, the Hilton Waikoloa Village and others (including shopping). To the North 15 mins by car is the Mauna Kea Beach Resort, Autograph Collection and the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.
The Four Seasons Haulalai is 24 mins drive to the south (or approx 16 miles).
Airbnb and VRBO also have a number of options in the area.

FAQs

How can I learn more about the Resort and what is available?

Please visit Mauna Lani's website (link included above). There is a ton of information available there on adventures at the Resort and in surrounding areas, including the Mauna Lani Wellness & Tennis Club, championship oceanfront golf, a spa, Holoholo Kids Crew (ages 5-12), Kalama Kai (42- Yellowfin powerboat for fishing, snorkeling, or open charter), sunrise canoe paddle, guided and self tour SUP (stand up paddleboard) experiences, surf lessons, beachfront yoga, hiking, scuba diving and cultural (e.g., lei making, walking tour) experiences. While some of the activities such as tennis clinics, golf, renting Kalama Kai do require additional fees, some of the activities such as sunrise canoe paddle, beachside yoga, self-guided SUP and the Holoholo Kids Crew are included in the Resort fee.
As all activities are subject to availability, we would recommend reserving or confirming capacity in advance by emailing mnl.prearrival@aubergeresorts.com.
We will be including a blog area where people can post if they're interested in a particular activity (i.e., joining a fishing charter, golf outing or helicopter tour or hiking Mauna Kea (Hawaii's highest peak)) or have found a great idea that they want to share so guests can coordinate with the broader group.

Can I bring my keiki (children)?

To Hawaii, of course! The Mauna Lani has plenty of complementary kid-friendly activities to entertain your keiki, in addition to special keiki welcome amenities and complimentary gear (pack-n-play, crib, etc.). If you’re staying at Mauna Lani, please coordinate any needs for your keiki through mnl.prearrival@aubergeresorts.com

To the wedding, we welcome the choice you make in your better judgment on whether your little(s) will make it through a night of entertainment in an HST time zone. Our plans include a special keiki dinner at cocktail hour (which will immediately follow the ceremony), but no special seating for keiki at the dinner reception following cocktail hour. If you are planning on bringing your keiki to (all or any portion of) the wedding, we kindly ask that you include them in your RSVP and specify which portions of the evening you expect your keiki to attend (i.e., ceremony or ceremony and cocktail hour, etc.) so we can make appropriate arrangements.

If you are interested in childcare for your keiki during the wedding or at any point during your stay at the Mauna Lani, the Resort does offer childcare services, in addition to the HoloHolo Kids Crew (ages 5-12). Please reach out to mnl.prearrival@aubergeresorts.com to coordinate.

What should I do when there is no wedding activity?

ENJOY HAWAI'I! If you're staying at Mauna Lani, see below on some activities that are available in addition to the 3 pools (main pool, kids sand bottom and adult only) and the beach. If you're staying in the area, see our suggestions on Kona and Kohala Coast activities and, hopefully, the group will populate and share additional ideas on the blog.

What do I wear?

Welcome Drinks - This is casual. And where we’d love to see your favorite Hawaiian attire! As of now, the restaurant is suggesting keeping it inside given the expected outdoor temperature, but the restaurant does have a wall of doors that open so if it is not too hot out, we may opt for the indoor/outdoor feel. It is also a short walk (15 mins) from Mauna Lani. There will be driving options for those who would prefer.
Wedding Reception - This is formal. We love a good excuse to dress up. The ceremony is on the beach, cocktail hour and dinner are on the grass and, as you may expect, all of it is outside.
The balance of the weekend is up to you!
Also, as we are sure you golfers need no reminder, don’t forget the appropriate golf attire if you plan on golfing!

What is the weather going to be like?

Hawaii’s air temperature does not stray too far year-round with lows on average (in the colder months) in the mid-60s and highs on average (in the warmer months) in the upper 80s.

The air temperature in late June/early July typically has lows in the mid-70s with highs in the mid to high 80s, with partially cloudy skies expected from time to time, and low (roughly 20% or less) chances of rain. The water temperature is expected mid to high 70s (75-80 degrees). Late June sunrises are just before 6 am HST and sunset is just after 7 pm HST.

We suggest bringing plenty of REEF SAFE sunscreen if you plan to be in the ocean as there is a healthy marine life population along the Kohala Coast. If you’re staying at the Mauna Lani, there is also backup sunscreen available at the pools (and in the Goop Store on the property - although it won’t be cheap at the Goop Store - please blame Gwen).

Note, if you plan to visit Hilo, Mauna Kea or any of the other volcanos, the weather is much chillier at the higher elevations (there is snow on Mauna Kea much of the year) so you should pack accordingly if your plans will bring you to the higher elevations.
